The 22 test runs of the classic Tennessee Eastman dataset, scored with the PCA monitor from my master's thesis. Pick a run, the statistic and the limit method: the figures come from the results exported with tfmfdd, and your browser recomputes them from the 960 samples of each series.

A simulated chemical plant that Downs and Vogel proposed in 1993 as a process-control benchmark: a reactor, condenser, separator, compressor and stripper that make two products from four reactants. This page uses 52 variables (41 measured and 11 manipulated) sampled every 3 minutes.
The simulator ships 20 programmed disturbances (IDV 1–20) and the classic dataset adds one more, IDV 21. Each test run lasts 48 hours (960 samples); the fault enters at sample 161, after 8 hours of normal operation.
- how far the sample is from the centre of normal operation, measured inside the plane of the 27 principal components (85.5% of the variance).
- SPE (Q)
- what is left outside that plane: the part of the sample the model cannot reconstruct.
A familiar movement, only larger, tends to raise T²; a broken relation between variables tends to raise SPE. That is why both are worth watching: compare IDV 4 with “Both”.
Cómo se calibraron los límitesHow the limits were calibrated
The PCA is fitted on the first 350 rows of d00.dat, the fault-free training run; those rows also set the scaling (mean and standard deviation). The remaining 150 rows are held out: the model never sees them, and they only set the 99% limits.
- F / Box.
- F / Box. T² uses the phase II F distribution, parametric, computed with n = 350: it does not use the held-out rows. SPE uses Box's approximation (a weighted chi-square matched to the mean and variance of the held-out SPE), because tfmfdd has no F limit for SPE. This is the A1 baseline configuration.
- KDE.
- KDE. Gaussian kernel density (Scott bandwidth) of the statistic on the held-out rows.
- Empírico. Percentil 99 del estadístico en las filas reservadas.
- Empirical. 99th percentile of the statistic on the held-out rows.

Cómo se cuentan FAR, FDR y retardoHow FAR, FDR and delay are counted
- AlarmaAlarm
- una muestra cuyo estadístico supera el límite.
- a sample whose statistic is above the limit.
- FAR, falsas alarmasFAR, false alarms
- share of alarms among healthy samples: 1–160 in the fault runs and the whole series (1–960) in the normal run d00. With 99% limits you would expect about 1%.
- share of alarms among the faulty samples, 161–960.
- RetardoDelay
- samples from 161 to the first alarm of the first run of 3 consecutive alarms (0 = the run starts at 161). 1 sample = 3 min.
- a run of 3 can show up by chance in 800 samples. If the FDR stays below 10%, the fault is reported as not detected (alarms at chance level) and its delay is not read as a detection.
De dónde salen los datosWhere the data comes from
From the classic TEP dataset distributed by Chiang, Russell and Braatz: d00.dat for training and d00_te.dat to d21_te.dat for testing. The descriptions of IDV 1–20 are Downs and Vogel's (1993); the one for IDV 21 is Russell, Chiang and Braatz's (2000).
The series are published with 3 significant digits. The 32 values whose alarm state would flip against some limit after rounding keep just enough digits to preserve it: recomputing with them gives exactly the same metrics.
